Egypt enjoyed a unique status during the reign of Salaahud-Deen. While the Ayyubid armies were striving against the Crusaders in Ash-Shaam and Egypt, they were keen to maintain security and stability in Egypt. They were also keen to provide economic prosperity to the Egyptians and this was best reflected in the conditions of the Egyptian peasants. During the reign of the Ayyubids, the farmers never revolted or rebelled.
The victorious Islamic leader, Salaahud-Deen, left a clear imprint in the Islamic history of Egypt that had reached its climax in the fields of defense and military due to the famous victory in the Battle of Hitteen in 583 AH / 1187 AD. The “Bureau of the Army”, which was the counterpart of the Ministry of Defense at the present time, was established. It was stipulated that the head of this Bureau should be a Muslim. The head of the Army Bureau had to be a Muslim.
He held a venerable prestigious status and enjoyed broad authorities. He was responsible for observing the conditions of the soldiers. During the rule of Salaahud-Deen, military feudalism prevailed. The military feudal system means lands were distributed among the superior state officials and army leaders instead of giving them salaries. They were given land in exchange for their military services and in exchange for offering a number of well-equipped soldiers to the Sultan’s Armed Forces at the time of war.
In spite of the circumstances that rendered the Ayyubid State in Egypt a military state due to its long-lasting wars with the Crusaders, commerce prospered and flourished in Egypt to a remarkable degree. During the reign of Salaahud-Deen, trade flourished outstandingly when international commercial relations were established between Egypt and the Italian republics: Pisa, Venice, and Genoa. Italian traders used to come to the Damietta and Alexandria harbors to buy Oriental commodities.
